Why You Should Register to Vote

February 15, 2017

On Thursday 4th May people across Lancashire will vote for their County Councillors.

You may not know your County Councillor or know what they do, but you should know why it is important to vote!

Lancashire County Council are responsible for a wide range of services including leisure services, waste collection, roads, and libraries. The people elected on May 4th will make decisions about the future of these services in Lancashire.

So why should you vote?

Simply put, not enough young people vote! This has massive implications for the type of policies pursued by Government and Councils alike. A lack of young voters also means politicians often prioritise the concerns of other people. It is no coincidence that pensions have been protected whilst Further Education has been cut!

Currently, only 69% of 18-34 year olds are registered to vote. Compared to 95% of those over 55.

How do I do it?

All you need to do is go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and complete the registration form.

You need to be 18+ to vote, but there is nothing stopping you registering before then!

If you move address you need to register again as you vote for your local Councillor, MP, or MEP.

It's worth noting that only 27% of people who have lived at their current address for less than a year are registered to vote.
